April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month - this year's national theme is "Respect Works" and focuses on preventing sexual violence in our workplaces. To learn more about the national campaign, go to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center at http://www.nsvrc.org.
Important Safety Information
For victims of abuse, using a computer at home, or where an abuser has access to it, can be very dangerous. It is impossible to erase all computer history. Additionally, spyware can be installed onto your computer without your knowledge and give the abuser ways to track and monitor your computer activity.
We highly recommend that you use a computer that you know is “safe,” and one in which the abuser has no access. You can go to a trusted friend’s home, a public library, or a rape crisis or domestic violence program in your community. You can also call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or TTY 1-800-787-3224 and the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673)
- Every year, an estimated 1 woman in 8 in college is raped and in 85% of those assaults the women knew their attacker. (Texas Woman's University, 2007)
- Approximately 1 out of every 6 women in the United States has experienced attempted or completed rape. (Tjaden & Thoennes, 2006)
