HOMICIDE
OCJS is working to combat violent crimes such as homicide in Ohio’s cities through the Northern Ohio Violent Crime Consortium Violence Prevention Initiative. Consortium member cities include Akron, Canton, Cleveland, Elyria, Lorain, Mansfield, Toledo and Youngstown.
The consortium, which focuses on urban settings, is a state, federal
and local partnership committed to using technology, innovative violence prevention efforts and intelligence led policing to reduce homicides and
other violent crimes. The Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI) is a
component of the consortium. The VPI is modeled on Boston's Operation Ceasefire initiative. VPI focuses specifically on group-related
violent crime
and has three components:
-
Consequence and accountability for violent crimes
-
Clear and direct community stand against violence
-
Assistance for those who want out of a violent life
