WORKPLACE VIOLENCE
Workplace violence is defined as unwelcome harassment; threats;
or attacks causing fear, mental or physical harm, or
unreasonable stress in the workplace.
According to the Ohio Employee Assistance Program
law enforcement officers, corrections officers and taxi cab drivers
are
the top three careers that are victims of crime while on the job.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, nearly 5 percent of
the 7.1 million private industry business establishments in the U.S.
had an incident of workplace violence in 2005
(the most recent stats available).
In this time frame, nationally, state government reported
higher percentages of all types of workplace violence in the previous
12 months than local government or private industry.
Approximately 32 percent of all state government workplaces
reported some form of workplace violence, while local government
reported 15 percent.
